A Message from Superintendent Nora Gutierrez

Dear Tolleson Union High School District Community,

Autumn is here with the hope that cooler weather is just around the corner. After such a brutal summer, we all look forward to the nice morning and evening temperatures. We sincerely hope that you have an opportunity to get out and enjoy the Arizona weather in the wide-open spaces where it’s easy to stay 6 feet apart, like parks and open-air facilities, as an alternative to being indoors for so many months.

We are closely monitoring the positivity rate of our community and that of our entire district boundaries. We are getting information from Maricopa County directly that we use as the basis for a safe return to in-person learning on our campuses. If you would like to see the information from the county yourself, please visit Maricopa County and search the data by high school district to see the most recent metrics.

No one wants to see our kids in school more than we do, but we must do it in the safest way possible. We take the responsibility of keeping your children safe seriously. We know that you appreciate that. We will base all decisions for returning to in-person, on-campus learning, athletics, and co-curricular programs on meeting the metrics to ensure the health and safety of our students, staff, and the community.

I am excited to share some great news about some of our Hidden Gems. Each year, the Arizona Department of Administration holds an art cover contest for the Cyber Security Calendar, and 13 winners are selected each year. Last year, out of 750 entries, three of Ms. Sara Ivey’s Art 1 students at Westview High School won. David, a senior, Ezekial, a sophomore, and Kaylee, a freshman, were all selected to have their artwork included as part of the calendar. Great jobs, students, and congratulations to Ms. Ivey.

We continue to stress that together we can beat COVID-19 by following and practicing the guidelines put forth by the Centers for Disease Control. For more information on proper safety protocols, please visit the CDC website and share the information with your family members.

As always, check our website often for the most updated information. Also, follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay up-to-date that way.

Stay safe and stay Tolleson strong!
