A Message from Superintendent Nora Gutierrez

Dear Tolleson Union High School District Community,

Welcome to the new year – a time to say goodbye to 2020 and a time to say hello to 2021. The new year is before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. As we begin the second semester, we are committed to continuing our united focus on student academic achievement. The entire TUHSD staff is here to support our students for success.

Our teachers and staff will hit the ground running now that we are into 2021, and we expect our students to do the same. By now, you have become accustomed to working online, and we hope that sometime before the end of this school year, we can see everyone’s smiling faces on our campuses again. Time will tell if we can meet the metrics. All decisions for a return to in-person, on-campus learning will be done by following the metrics and data provided to us by our local and state leaders and the corresponding county and state health officials.

If you had told me a year ago that we would be doing online learning for an entire year, I wouldn’t have believed it. But we have done what we must to protect the health and well-being of our students, our staff, and their families. No one can fault us for having the health and safety of our TUHSD community at heart.

We have a beautiful, new, state-of-the-art performing arts center at Sierra Linda that we have not been able to use and have not been able to properly christen as a new addition to the Sierra Linda community. Rest assured, the moment that we are able to celebrate this new facility, it will be the biggest celebration in Sierra Linda’s history since the opening of the school!

The pandemic has not stopped us from adding new buildings on the campus of Tolleson Union High School. There is a new science building, performing arts center, and media center being added to the Tolleson campus. New classrooms are also being added to University High School. We will persevere as a school district and a nation. Already with vaccines being approved, produced, and distributed, we hope to see some semblance of normality creeping into our lives sometime during the spring and summer. Until then, continue to wear your masks, social distance, and wash your hands. As we have always stated… we are #TollesonStrong!

And now on to our celebrations! The four student winners from the district’s Sandra Day O’Connor Art Contest have been announced. They are Alondra Garcia Villalpando from Westview, Ernesto Nuñez from West Point, Evelyn Kerbs from Copper Canyon, and Jarvis Rosas Gonzalez from Sierra Linda. Congratulations and great job, students!

Congratulations to the Copper Canyon AZTEC MEDIA staffers for winning awards at the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association (AIPA) state high school journalism contest recently. After setting a new mark for Copper Canyon with 11 awards last year, the AZTEC MEDIA team brought home a new record of 15 awards this year. Not only did the overall number of awards increase, but we also increased the number of superior (first place) and excellent (second place) awards.

Remember to mark your calendar for the following important dates:

  • Monday, January 4, 2021, is the first day of the second semester.
  • Monday, January 18, 2021, is Civil Rights Day (Schools and district offices will be closed.)

As always, check our website often for the most updated information. Also, follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay up-to-date that way.

Be safe, and stay Tolleson Strong!
